Port des Canonge is an old fishing harbour belonging to Banyalbufar, at the foot of the Tramuntana, reached down a narrow road of tight bends where meeting a car coming up is nerve-racking. At the bottom are a handful of houses, the boathouses (escars) and trees that reach almost to the sea, with a shore of pebbles and rock, no sand, open to the sea and split into several little coves. When it is calm the water is very clear and mild, good for snorkelling along the rocks; on other days there is seaweed on the shore, the water turns cloudy, the way in is slippery and jellyfish appear. There is a car park for about twenty cars, a picnic area and a couple of restaurants – Can Toni Moreno is the one reviewers mention most. Many people arrive on foot along the Volta des General from Banyalbufar, a wide, waymarked, almost level path with plenty of shade beside the sea, a little over an hour each way with excellent coastal views. It draws more islanders than foreigners and is usually quiet. Good for a walk with a swim and lunch, or for anyone avoiding crowds; if you want a beach to lie on all day, there are better places.
