CatsMusics Jazz Club

From the outside, on a quiet street in Santa Maria del Camí, nothing suggests that one of the island’s most serious live-music stages is inside. You walk into what feels like a grandmother’s living room, music memorabilia everywhere, shared tables and the stage a few metres away; out the back there’s a hidden terrace with a fireplace, for talking without disturbing the band, and a cat that wanders through it all. The programme is curated by pianist and bassist Ricardo Manzano, who also plays, and it changes every week: a soul night with the resident band, jazz trios, blues, vibraphone and guitar, the odd flamenco or salsa gig and, on Saturdays, an open jam session that runs late. Most of the musicians are island professionals, with guests from elsewhere. There’s no entry fee: it works as a reverse box office, with a supplement on your first drink that goes to the musicians, and after that drinks and wine are priced like a village bar. There’s no kitchen; it’s a place to have a drink and listen. About twenty minutes from Palma, it’s a good reason to get out of town on a Wednesday or a Sunday.
