Bodega Ribas
The same family has made wine here since 1711; try the old-vine Sió
View in the app · free, no sign-upIn 1711 Pedro Ribas de Cabrera built a winery in Consell, at the foot of the Tramuntana and close to his vines, and ten generations later the family is still making wine on the same spot: it’s Mallorca’s oldest working winery. The estate also produced olive oil and wheat; his son Mateo built the oil mill in 1774 and the house in 1776, and in 1877 a red made from the local Gargollassa grape won the medal for perfection at Spain’s National Wine Exhibition. After phylloxera they replanted with grafted Mantonegro and Prensal, sold in bulk for generations and only started bottling in 1986. The visit shows both sides: the stone fermentation vats and barrels of the old house, and the new winery designed by Rafael Moneo. The range runs from Ribas (white, rosé and red) to Sió and Sioneta, topped by Ribas de Cabrera, made only in exceptional vintages from the oldest Mantonegro vines. Tastings come with island produce – cheeses and charcuterie – and can be done with a guided tour or, more briefly, on the garden terrace. What people value most is that whoever leads it really knows the subject, and the family often looks after visitors themselves.
