Es Caló is not a beach as such but a natural harbour at the foot of Cap de Ferrutx near Artà, inside the Llevant natural park: a small inlet with an old fishermen's jetty, little sand and plenty of stone, and still, very clear water you slip into like a rock pool (getting out takes a bit more effort). You can only reach it on foot, by bike or by boat. The path starts in Betlem, where you leave the car: around 3 kilometres of earth and stone, almost flat, always beside the sea with views over the Bay of Alcúdia, passing above little gravel coves such as Sa Macada, Cala Fonda and Cala Mata; allow 45 to 60 minutes and comfortable shoes, as the surface is uneven and the final descent needs care. Behind the jetty there is a second small cove facing another way, handy when the sea is choppy. What people remember most are the sunsets: the sun goes down over the bay with the Tramuntana behind. The catch is summer: in July and August boats anchor a few metres off the shore (one visitor counted around thirty), some on the seagrass even though there are moorings, and some days seaweed piles up. Snorkelling is pleasant without many fish. There is no shade, no facilities and no water, and goats sometimes come down to beg for food. It works with children who can walk and for a Sunday hike with a swim.
