Seaside paella, fresh fish & lighthouse views: dining with beach charm.

Across the harbour from Portocolom, on the road to the lighthouse, S'Arenal is a small beach of sand that slopes gently into water that's almost always calm, and it has natural shade, something rare on the island's beaches. Its beach bar, run by Grupo Marport, sits under the tamarisks on the sand and is designed with families in mind: breakfasts in the morning, shaded tables at lunch and bamboo sunloungers. The menu makes its strength clear: fresh fish, grilled and served with salad (sea bream, sea bass, squid, sole), and if you ask the waiter they can bring other fish such as scorpionfish, John Dory or pargo, or order in whatever you fancy. For sharing, clams, cockles, mussels, queen scallops and grilled prawns, plus lobster with chips and fried eggs if you want to treat yourself. There's also tumbet, trampó, pa amb oli with Iberian secreto and chips made with potatoes from S'Horta, the next village, and a wine list with plenty of island producers. It isn't cheap beach-shack food, but you're paying for produce, and it's one of the most pleasant spots around for a beach day with children.
