Right on Avinguda Joan Miró, at Sant Agustí, among the tourist bars on the way to Cala Major, Sodapop is a neighbourhood llonguet-and-pa-amb-oli bar, decorated vintage-style with salvaged objects, a sobrassada hanging in plain view and a small covered terrace. Everything comes out of a tiny kitchen, which is why you sometimes wait. The house stakes its name on two kinds of bread: pa amb oli (Mallorcan bread with oil and tomato, topped) and the llonguet, the island’s soft bread roll, and with both the point is the combinations. The classics are there (camaiot — Mallorcan cured pork — with cheese, tuna, sobrassada), but the most ordered are sobrassada with flaked almonds and honey, figs and sobrassada when they’re in season, and pulled chicken with cheddar and bacon; the llonguets of the day change, and the curried chicken one has its loyal fans. To start, nachos, done here Mallorcan-style with sobrassada or vegan with homemade guacamole. Cakes are homemade — the cheesecake with pistachio and white chocolate sauce is the famous one — and to drink there’s Mallorcan vermouth, mojitos and a good range of beers. Service is friendly, the kind where the owner comes over to tell you about the produce, and dogs are welcome: they get water and the odd treat. It’s for a good, cheap dinner with no airs; if you want restaurant cooking, this isn’t it. On weekdays it only opens in the evening; on Fridays and Saturdays, at lunchtime too.
