On Plaça de la Quartera, with a second door onto Carrer del Pes de la Farina, Quartera is a brunch café with a yoga studio downstairs in an old vaulted cellar. Upstairs you eat in a living room full of plants and books: there's a library of feminist and queer writing, classic and contemporary, that you can browse at the table and that is sometimes lent out. The menu is short and homemade: toast with good bread and good olive oil, avocado among them, bowls, banana bread, gluten-free and vegan options, tea and chai latte, and a solid list of alcohol-free drinks, though there's beer too. The owner is usually behind the counter and serves in Spanish, English, Romanian and Swedish. What makes it more than a café is the programme: yoga classes in several languages in the room downstairs, meditation, women's circles, book clubs, kirtan, small concerts, jams and poetry readings. It was set up as a space for Palma's local community and is openly LGBTQ+, with the kind of calm that lets you read; dogs are welcome too.
