Things to do in Muro

Playa de Muro and s'Albufera Natural Park: dunes, pines and birdlife on Alcúdia bay.

Muro is a farming town on the central plain, with the tower of the church of Sant Joan Baptista rising above stone roofs, and a municipality that runs all the way down to the sea. There everything changes: Playa de Muro is a long beach of fine sand and shallow water on the Bay of Alcúdia, with dunes and pines behind and some stretches with hardly any buildings. For families with small children, it's one of the easiest beaches on the island.

Behind the beach lies the Parc Natural de s'Albufera, the largest wetland in the Balearics: canals, reed beds and hides where you can watch herons, flamingos and migrating birds. You explore it on foot or by bike on flat tracks, with a free permit from the Sa Roca reception centre. For lunch with your feet in the sand, Ponderosa Beach and Can Gavella at Ses Casetes des Capellans, at the southern end of the beach; for a special dinner, the tasting menu at Fusion19 on Avinguda de s'Albufera. In January, the Sant Antoni festival fills Muro with bonfires.

Getting there

Muro is about 40 minutes from Palma via the Inca motorway and the Sa Pobla road; Playa de Muro about 45. SFM trains on the Sa Pobla line stop in Muro town, which is several kilometres from the beach. TIB buses run from Palma's Estació Intermodal to the Bay of Alcúdia. At s'Albufera, park by the entrance and carry on on foot or by bike.

When to go

S'Albufera is best in spring and autumn, early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when there are more birds and less heat. The beach is for June to September; in July and August arrive early if you want space. The town has a market on Sundays. In winter most beach hotels and bars close, but s'Albufera stays open.
