In the same row of beach huts at Ses Casetes des Capellans as Can Gavella, at the southern end of Playa de Muro, Ponderosa Beach calls itself a «chiringuito 2.0», and the label is fair: tables on the sand, some facing the sea and others the dunes, careful tableware, a sommelier and a long wine list, from affordable bottles to serious ones. Rice is the speciality, made with homemade fish stock. The one people mention most is octopus and crab rice, creamy or dry; the seafood paella and the arroz del señorito (everything already shelled) are the classic choices, and there is a vegetarian paella. To start, the ceviche, the queen scallops and calamari served with orange mayonnaise. There is also whole fresh fish (sea bass, John Dory, turbot), charged per portion, which can send the bill soaring. The house drink is cava sangria, and they even have a cola made on the island. They work with local produce and hold ISO 14001 environmental certification. Some days there's a DJ or live music, but it's a lunchtime restaurant: the kitchen closes mid-afternoon. It's expensive for a beach bar, and the people who come back every summer know it: what you pay for is eating well with your feet in the sand.
