Can Casasnovas was an old Palma shop, and Las Columnas has kept what remained of it: the wooden dressers with their period jars, the restored furniture and that last-century shop feel that has vanished from most of the centre. Today it's a small, family-run café on Carrer de Sant Domingo, a step from Plaça Major, with a corner of deli products and a secret you can't see from the street: down a flight of stairs, an inner courtyard with a fountain, cool and quiet in the middle of the old town.

The menu is short and simple, built on seasonal ingredients: focaccias, sandwiches, salads you can add to as you like (the Greek is a favourite), pasta — the pesto has its fans — and sweet things for your coffee. To drink, fresh juices and smoothies, and an orange and ginger tea worth asking about. Inside there's a big shared table where you end up chatting to strangers, with soft music in the background.

It's for a mid-morning break or a quick, calm lunch between sights rather than a big meal, and its regulars mix people who work in the centre with anyone looking for respite from the bustle of the shopping streets.
