On Carrer del Carme, near the Rambla, Cafè Riutort fills the ground floor of an old house that keeps its lived-in character: worn walls, art everywhere, plants and decor that looks deliberately undone. It's run by a woman owner, and the staff greet you in Mallorquí first, which is no longer the norm in central Palma. Its own tagline sums it up in Catalan: cafè d'especialitat, berenars, dinars — specialty coffee, mid-morning bites and lunches.

Coffee is what brings many people in: the flat white and café con leche are reputed to be among the best in the centre, and there's oat milk if you don't take dairy. To eat, toasts on good bread, almost all vegetarian: ricotta with lamb's lettuce, fruit and quince oil is the one that defines the place, with avocado with tahini and almonds, banana with peanut butter, and white-bean hummus with peppers close behind. There are also llonguets (Palma's bread roll) with sobrassada or pesto, a brioche toastie topped with a poached egg, granola with yoghurt, and pistachio, peanut, chocolate and sea-salt cookies people remember. At lunchtime there's a vegetarian dish of the day.

It's small, quiet and has few tables, and service can be slow when it fills up. Ideal for an unhurried breakfast or afternoon snack; if you want a protein-heavy lunch, the options are limited.
