La Rosa Vermuteria & Colmado

Vermouth before lunch, Palma-style: grilled octopus and prawn croquettes.

Half of it is a delicatessen: by the door they sell tinned seafood, wines and gourmet produce, and the rest is a two-floor vermouth bar on Carrer de la Rosa in central Palma, done out in old-fashioned style with the larder on show. You come first for the vermouth: the house one, 5 Pétalos, is reason enough to stop, and there are cocktails if you want to go further. The food is classic Spanish tapas, good produce, simply done. Gildas (anchovy, olive and pickled-chilli skewers) are the obligatory opener; then the very juicy potato tortilla (also with truffle), Ibérico ham croquettes and the oversized steak croqueta, torreznos (crispy pork belly) and the grilled octopus, the dish you'll see going past most often. There are Mallorcan touches too, such as squid with sobrassada mayonnaise or a cardenal de Lloseta (meringue sponge) for dessert, which competes with the torrija, Spain's answer to French toast. Portions are generous and prices restrained for the centre. Groups can have a tapas menu with drinks included, and the upper floor opens for large tables. Service is quick even when it's packed, though sometimes everything lands at once: order in rounds if you want your food hot.
