Pere Garau's municipal market, in the neighbourhood of the same name in eastern Palma, about a 20-minute walk from the centre, is where locals do their shopping: tourists are the exception. Inside there's fish and seafood, butchers, charcuterie stalls with sobrassada and island sausages, cheese, olives, spices, and fruit and veg from local growers. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays the square also fills with open-air stalls where farmers sell vegetables and flowers (on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the outdoor stalls sell clothes and odds and ends). In 2023 it had 14 stalls standing empty; it reopened a dozen with a revival plan, which won it the award for best collective retail initiative from METRAE, the Spanish traditional markets association. The downsides: the building is functional, without the charm of the Olivar, and it closes in the early afternoon and on Sundays.
