Restaurant El Coche

On Avinguda Mateo Bosch, the waterfront of Port d'Andratx, El Coche looks out at the Club de Vela and the fishing boats, with a small, well-kept dining room behind that feels more like a house than a promenade restaurant. It’s billed as Mediterranean, tapas and fish, but in practice it’s a rice house: paella, seafood or mixed, is what almost every table orders at lunch, and the creamy rice with lobster is the one for an occasion. Before that, cold starters work well, such as tuna tartare with avocado and mango, and fried artichokes with honey that come out as crisp as baby squid. Beyond rice, the fish of the day is cooked simply: turbot, sea bass or sole, plus a black pasta with seafood that has its loyal fans. The wine list leans towards Galician whites, with a Godello they often recommend. Portions are on the modest side and bread, alioli and water are charged separately, as almost everywhere on the harbour. If you want rice by the water in Andratx without the prices of the designer places further along, it’s one of the safer bets.
