Terracota Rooftop

The rooftop of Hotel Antigua Palma

To reach Terracota you walk right through Hotel Antigua Palma, a boutique hotel in an old house on Carrer del Sol in the old town, and climb its stairs to the roof. The house keeps a 17th-century sandstone (marés) vault in its ground-floor bar, one of its oldest features, and the climb is part of the visit. Up top there’s no panorama of the bay and no head-on Cathedral view: what you get is old-town rooftops, a small, quiet terrace with little shade, and a tiny spot with water to cool off on hot days. What’s on offer changes through the day. At lunchtime and in the afternoon, vermouth, wine and tapas to share, with plenty of vegetarian options: a goat’s cheese salad, kofta-style meatballs or a potato pastry make a light dinner for two. At sunset, cocktails, sangria and, now and then, live music. It’s open to everyone, not just guests, and since few people know it’s there, it’s usually quiet. Drinks are hotel-priced (an Aperol is around €15). It’s for a calm hour after walking the old town, not for postcard views or a buzz.
