Bodega Morey

On Carrer d'en Morei, a narrow street between the town hall (Cort) and the cathedral, an old-style bodega is still going: a few tables, the bar, bottles on show and a tiny kitchen at the back. People who know the old neighbourhood remember it as a place for afternoon snacks; for the past five years or so it has been run by a team that turned it into a lunchtime tapas and vermouth bar, where office workers and neighbours mix with people exploring the old town.

You come for vermouth on tap, a well-pulled caña or an island wine — there are natural wines too — with small plates of home cooking. The artichokes are the dish almost every returning customer orders again. The variat mallorquín, a plate of assorted island tapas, lets you try a bit of everything; ensaladilla (Russian salad), tortilla, meatballs and a llonguet (Palma's bread roll) with sobrassada make up the fixed menu, and to pick at with your drink there are gildas (anchovy, olive and chilli skewers) and Santoña anchovies. Each day brings an off-menu dish or two, such as a cannelloni or an aubergine.

This isn't chef's cooking: it's well-made neighbourhood tapas, small portions at fair prices, the kind where a vermouth and three or four plates make a meal. When it's packed and short-staffed, service suffers; when it's calm, they'll recommend dishes and tell you how they make them. The room is tiny and not suited to groups.
