Cala Beltràn is a long, narrow, curving inlet, almost a fjord, right next to Cala Pi in Llucmajor, wedged between pine-topped limestone cliffs. There is no sand: you sunbathe on the rock ledges along its sides and get into the water off the stones. Thanks to its shape hardly any swell gets in, and the water is turquoise and very clear; with a mask you see lots of fish and can dive to around 4 or 5 metres, and there are a few places to jump from. To get there, cross Cala Pi beach to the far end, behind the last boathouse, where steps cut into the rock climb up the cliff; at the top a path runs above the sea, almost flat, to the cove: about 15 to 20 minutes, with a couple of steep bits and a little scrambling down to the water. It is not for flip-flops or limited mobility, but families with sure-footed children manage it, and if you are prone to vertigo you will feel it. Because you have to walk, it is usually far quieter than Cala Pi, even in August. From above you can see its snaking shape, which you lose once you are down. The recurring downsides: small jellyfish on some days, litter, cans and graffiti on the rocks, brown water after a storm and, in spring, processionary caterpillars in the pines along the path. It is for a snorkel and a few hours on the rock, not for anyone wanting sand.
