Cala Pi is a long, narrow finger of sea that runs between pine-topped cliffs on the Llucmajor coast and ends in a beach of fine, pale sand just over 50 m wide, with the escars – the traditional boathouses – and a little jetty to one side. Being so sheltered, the water is nearly always flat calm, like a pond, even on windy days, and you can stand a long way out, which is why it works so well for small children. You go down from the estate by a long, wide stone staircase of more than 150 steps, easy on the way down and hard work at the end of the day; there's no wheelchair access. Up top there's a supermarket, bars and restaurants, and free parking in the surrounding streets. Before heading down, a path through the scrub leads to viewpoints over the cove, where you get the turquoise photo everyone is after. In the morning one side is shaded by pines; at midday the whole beach is in sun, and in the late afternoon the sand falls into shadow while the water still catches the light. Worth knowing: the colour varies a lot from day to day. Towards the end of summer many recent reviews find it cloudy and greenish, with seaweed at the edge and some plastic, and in the evenings boats arrive to anchor. There's a lifeguard in summer, but no beach bar, showers or toilets at the bottom. Weekends get packed; on weekdays and out of season it's another place.
