An estate in the Marina de Llucmajor, on Camí des Palmer, where pharmacist Montserrat Pons has been planting fig trees from more than 30 countries since 1995, building what Spain's trade agency ICEX calls the most comprehensive private fig collection in the world: his website lists 2,834 trees and 1,308 varieties, including all 249 cultivated varieties described in the Balearics. It isn't a tourist attraction but an experimental field and gene bank, with a small fig museum next to the house. Visits are free on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings, often with Pons himself explaining the varieties, and there are golf carts to get around; in season you can pick figs straight from the tree (€5 a kilo in summer). The shop sells what the estate produces, such as jam, dried figs, liqueur, vinegar and fig salt, and even fig trees. The downsides: it's out of the way down country lanes, tours are mostly in Spanish with English not guaranteed, and in winter the trees have no leaves or fruit.
