Things to do in Llucmajor

14 places in and around Llucmajor, picked one by one by locals, each with a local tip.

Llucmajor is one of Mallorca's largest municipalities and has two sides. Inland is the town, with its square, its markets and a countryside of carob and almond trees and dry-stone walls; out on the Marina, Son Mut Nou has gathered a collection of fig trees from dozens of countries. Down on the coast, a line of cliffs runs from S'Arenal to Cap Blanc, with small coves cut into the rock and very little building.

Cala Pi is the best known: a tongue of sand at the end of a narrow ravine, with fishermen's huts and an old defence tower on the clifftop. Close by are the Talaiots de Capocorb Vell, one of the most thoroughly excavated prehistoric villages in the Balearics, and further west, Cala Blava and Cap Rocat, an old military fortress by the sea with its Sea Club. To the north, on the boundary with Algaida, the Puig de Randa climbs to the Santuari de Cura, where Ramon Llull withdrew to meditate, with views over half the central plain.

Getting there

Llucmajor town is about 20 minutes from the airport and Palma on the motorway; the coast at Cala Pi and Capocorb is about 35 minutes. TIB buses run from Palma's Estació Intermodal to the town and some coastal developments, but a car works better for the coves. At Cala Pi, park up in the village and walk down the steps.

When to go

Spring and autumn suit Randa, Son Mut Nou and Cap Blanc. In summer, go to Cala Pi early: it is small and fills up fast. The town has markets on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. In winter the coast is very quiet and some places close. In S'Arenal, drinking alcohol in the street is banned.
