Things to do in Santanyí
15 places in and around Santanyí, picked one by one by locals, each with a local tip.
Santanyí is the island's south-east at its most typical: a town of golden stone, the same marès sandstone that built half of Mallorca, and a ragged coastline of narrow coves opening between the pines. In town there are design and craft shops such as Terra Ceràmica, galleries like a66Gallery and terraces on the church square.
The coast is the reason to come. The Parc natural de Mondragó brings together sandy beaches, pine woods and signposted paths from one cove to the next. Cala Figuera still has its boathouses right at the water's edge, and Cala s'Almunia is a handful of fishermen's houses above a rocky cove, with Caló des Moro a few minutes' walk away. From the Es Pontàs viewpoint you see the rock arch standing out at sea, and Cala Llombards has sand and turquoise water between stone walls. For food, local cooking at places like Can Gelat or Ca'n Trompé.
Getting there
From Palma or the airport it is about 50 minutes by car on the Ma-19 and the road through Campos. TIB buses link Palma's Estació Intermodal with Santanyí and some of its coves. In summer the cove car parks fill early; around Es Llombards the town hall opens extra parking and regulates access.
When to go
May, June, September and October: good water and room on the sand. In July and August, arrive before ten or late in the afternoon. The market is on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, with Saturday the livelier of the two. From November to March many restaurants on the coast close, but the Mondragó paths are at their best.
