Cala Castell
A wild, secluded cove beneath dramatic cliffs, best reached by sea.
View in the app · free, no sign-upCala Castell lies on Pollença's north coast, on a roadless stretch of the Tramuntana below the Ternelles mountains and the Castell del Rei, the medieval fortress that gives it its name. It is a cove of rounded stones and gravel at the bottom of a ravine, with very clear water and no facilities whatsoever. Nearly everyone arrives by sea, on their own or a hired boat, so it is usually quiet, although on some summer days a fair number of boats gather and cigarette ends turn up on the shore. On foot you have to cross the Ternelles estate, which is private: you need prior permission from Pollença town hall, and people who have done it talk of around 10 kilometres from the gate, with lots of crossing tracks and few signs; some have ended up a few kilometres short without finding it. From June on, the heat makes the walk very hard going. Down at the cove, with a calm sea, the snorkelling is good, and nudism is common. It faces north: with a tramontana wind or a swell, do not even try. This is a cove for boat owners or for walkers who plan well ahead, not for a spur-of-the-moment afternoon.
