Things to do in Pollença
18 places in and around Pollença, picked one by one by locals, each with a local tip.
Pollença is really three places: the stone town at the foot of the Tramuntana, Port de Pollença on its calm, sheltered bay, and the Formentor peninsula, which runs out to sea between cliffs. In town you climb the Calvari steps, 365 of them between cypress trees up to a small chapel, then come back down to the Plaça Major, where life happens on the café terraces opposite the church.
For a walk there is the Puig de Maria, with a sanctuary on top and the whole bay below you. Cala Sant Vicenç has small coves of very clear water under the Cavall Bernat ridge, and the Formentor road leads to viewpoints such as Es Colomer and out to Cap de Formentor and its lighthouse. Cala Murta, off the Formentor road, and Cala Castell, on the north coast, are coves you can only reach on foot. In the Port, the seafront promenade is long and flat, good for cycling and for dinner watching the boats.
Getting there
From Palma or the airport it takes about 50 minutes by car on the Ma-13 motorway towards Alcúdia. TIB buses run from Palma's Estació Intermodal to Pollença and the Port. From 15 May to 18 October the Formentor road is restricted from 10:00 to 22:00: park in the Port on the Ma-2200 service road and take the TIB shuttle bus up.
When to go
May, June and September are the most pleasant months: the sea is warm enough and Formentor is not overrun. The market is on Sunday morning in the town and on Wednesday in the Port. On 2 August, the patron saint's day, the town re-enacts the Moros i Cristians battle. In winter the Port goes very quiet and many places close.
