Platja de Formentor
840 m of sand under pines facing the Illa de Formentor islet
View in the app · free, no sign-upFormentor beach, also called Cala Pi de la Posada, lies on the side of the peninsula facing the Bay of Pollença: a long but narrow strip of fine sand, with a band of small pebbles a couple of metres wide right at the water's edge, and pines and holm oaks growing ten metres from the sea that give shade all day, which is rare in Mallorca. Formentor island sits opposite. The water is clear, mild and shallow, almost like a pool, and the beach is sheltered from most winds; off the rocky points there are fish to see with a mask. Halfway along is the jetty for the boats from Port de Pollença, plus two or three restaurants and paid sunbeds; behind it stands the historic Hotel Formentor, with its long list of famous guests. Getting there is part of the day: the winding cape road, the 334 bus, or the boat from the Port, seeing the coast from the sea. In summer cars can only get in while the car park by the beach has spaces, and it's pricey and charged by time; when it fills, the barrier comes down and queues build. The downsides reviewers repeat: it's smaller than you expect, in July and August there isn't enough sand, boat excursions pull in, and some miss the wild beach it used to be. Ideal for families and a whole day in the shade.
