Cala Deià is an inlet of pebbles and very clear water at the foot of the cliffs, reached by a narrow road down from the village, with just two places to eat. Ca'n Lluc is a family-run beach shack right on the cove, the kind that treats you like a guest at home and gets plates out fast. Fish is what to order, cooked simply on the griddle: sardines, squid, red mullet, sea bass, a mixed grill to share and, in late summer and autumn, llampuga (dorado), the island’s seasonal fish, caught the traditional way under palm fronds floating on the surface. Plates come with potatoes and salad, and the trempó, Mallorca’s salad of tomato, pepper and onion, can be ordered with tuna. To finish, the homemade desserts: cheesecake, lemon meringue tart or almond gató. It isn’t chef-driven cooking and doesn’t try to be; it’s fresh produce in one of the loveliest spots on the Tramuntana coast, at fair prices for the location. In August, with the cove packed, there are waits and the calm goes.
