Castillo Hotel Son Vida

High up in the Son Vida estate, among golf courses and with the whole Bay of Palma below, Castillo Hotel Son Vida is a Marriott Luxury Collection hotel set in a castle whose origins go back to the 13th century. If you're not staying, the way in is the bar: Bar Armas, a lounge full of antiques with a display case of historical figurines, and its terrace, which looks out over the city, the port and the sea.

There are three ways to enjoy it without spending the night. The classic is a drink on the terrace as the afternoon fades, a cocktail or a coffee with that view; the bar's croquetas have a reputation. The second is the British-style afternoon tea in Bar Armas, with sandwiches, sweets and tea pastries. The third is the spa day passes — heated pool, jacuzzi and several saunas — which can be combined with a massage or the breakfast buffet, with artisan breads, ensaïmada, cocas, empanadas, honey from the hotel's own hives and Sóller orange juice.

It's classic hotel luxury, quiet and a little formal, better suited to a special afternoon than a night out. The brunch has disappointed some for the price; the terrace and afternoon tea are the safer bets.
