La Juanita

Authentic oxtail croquettes & broken eggs with foie; local tapas gem!

Away from the tourist streets, in Sa Vileta, Vermutería Juanita is a neighbourhood bar with tavern ambitions: vermouth, cocktails and sharing plates, with a bar counter, barrels with high stools, a dining room and a terrace. What you come for is the food, in generous, hearty portions: oxtail croquettes, torreznos (crispy pork belly), huevos rotos — fried eggs over chips — with foie and truffle, sirloin on toast and beef seared on a hot stone, with gildas (anchovy, olive and pickled-chilli skewers) to start. There's also an oxtail brioche and a pork-cheek bao. The place has firm house rules, and it's worth knowing them before you go, as they're behind almost every complaint: it's a vermouth bar, not a café, so no coffee; no free tapa with drinks; if you're only drinking, you sit at the bar or the barrels, as the tables are for diners; and in the evening it works purely as a restaurant, with the kitchen closing early. With that understood, people who come for dinner, or for vermouth with a few plates, usually leave happy. The practical side helps too: parking is easy in a lot a few metres away, and dogs are welcome.
