El Cielo del Born

A small rooftop in the Born with the Cathedral straight ahead.

On the roof of the Nivia Born, a five-star boutique hotel from the Garden group on Carrer dels Paraires, just off the Born, is a small terrace – a dozen covers and a bar – with the Cathedral peeking over the rooftops. Down below is the bustle of the shops; up here you hear little more than the next table. What sets it apart from Palma’s other rooftops is its size and its manner: no loud music, no queue, and staff without the aloofness you get elsewhere. The kitchen uses local and organic produce and changes through the day: brunch in the morning, a three-course lunch menu with a glass of wine included that is its best value (it was around €24), and in the afternoon tapas to go with a drink, a board of Mallorcan cheeses, fresh pasta or salmon in dill sauce. For dessert, the carrot cake has its fans. The tapas have a better name than the mains: think of it as an aperitif with a view rather than a big dinner.
