Coll Baix is a beach of dark gravel, small smooth pebbles like lentils, at the head of an inlet on the La Victòria peninsula near Alcúdia, closed in by high cliffs covered in pine. There is no beach bar, no lifeguard and no phone signal. The water is a deep, intense blue and gets deep two steps from the shore, after a ledge; this is open sea and it is often cold. By car you go from Alcúdia via Bonaire and Mal Pas, then several kilometres of potholed dirt track to three free car parks: the last one, by the barrier, has around 15 spaces and fills early. From there it is about 10 minutes to the Coll Baix refuge, with tables and a fountain of non-drinking water, then 30 to 40 minutes down through the pines. The last stretch is poorly marked: you head right, away from the beach, then cross a few hundred metres of slippery rock above the sea using your hands. Plenty of people turn back here, and it is not for small children, older people or anyone with vertigo. On the beach, wild goats open rucksacks to get at your lunch, the right-hand side is best for snorkelling and there are nudists. Mid-morning, catamarans and boats arrive and anchor very close to the shore, sometimes with music. With a northerly wind or a swell, big waves roll in, and in the afternoon the cliffs take the sun early.
