Hotel Saratoga opened on 7 May 1962 on Passeig de Mallorca, by the last stretch of the Riera, and it’s still run by the families who founded it. Its Sky Bar takes up the eighth and top floor and is open to everyone, not just guests: from up there, with 360-degree views, you see the Cathedral, Bellver Castle, the port and the old-town rooftops. It runs all day with two menus from the hotel’s chef, Juan Pinel. The lunchtime one is simple, for eating with a view without fuss: country bread with tomato, Andalusian-style fried squid, Mallorcan tomato salad with tuna belly, burgers or a pad thai. The evening menu is the interesting one: it leans towards Peru and Asia without forgetting the island, with ceviche-style oyster in leche de tigre, corvina tiradito, dry-aged beef tataki with a lomo saltado sauce, black-pork croquettes with dried apricot, or cod with Mallorcan almonds. If you’re mainly coming for sunset and a cocktail, the bar handles the classics well — the espresso martini has a reputation — and on many summer nights there’s a DJ or live music. Prices are reasonable for what it is: you can go up just for a drink without the bill being a shock. One floor down is L'Àtic, the hotel’s restaurant, in the room built in 1965 as a restaurant and dance hall that was for years the Blue Jazz Club.
