The name is misleading: The Wine Side isn’t a wine bar with tapas but a produce-led restaurant on Passeig de Mallorca, a short walk from Es Baluard, where wine plays a supporting role rather than the lead. The lead is fish and seafood, cooked with minimal fuss and listed on a specials board that changes with the market: red prawns, queen scallops, clams, oysters, bluefin tuna sashimi, sea anemones (ortiguillas) — as nigiri or over fried eggs and potatoes — and whole fish such as sole, chosen with advice from the floor staff. To start, the ensaladilla (Spanish potato salad) is the dish you see on most tables, and the croquettes, cuttlefish ones included and also gluten-free, are reliable; to share, the rice ‘a la llauna’ and the cannelloni have their followers. The wine cellar is the other pillar: a very long list with a strong showing of island wineries, and someone on the floor who knows how to suggest a pairing. The owner, Toni, is usually keeping an eye on the tables, and the kitchen is in view. It isn’t cheap and portions are measured, because what you pay for is the produce: it’s for anyone who wants properly treated fish and seafood in Palma with a good bottle, not a quick bite. It’s open for lunch and dinner, and the same team runs Wine Studio Little Jarana on Carrer Menorca.
