Seasonal plant-based cooking in a tiny old-town restaurant.

A few steps from Sa Llotja on Carrer de la Mar, Ca n'Ela is the old town's go-to vegan restaurant. There's no meat, fish, dairy or egg here, but no preaching either: the cooking wins over plenty of first-timers at a vegan restaurant, as well as locals who eat here every week. The room is small and calm, nicely kept, and the staff explain every dish.

It works in two shifts. At lunchtime there's a set menu that changes daily — four courses with two choices each (juice or salad, a soup, a main and a pudding), bread and water included — for just over €20, one of the best-value lunches in the area. In the evening the à la carte menu comes out, along with a tasting menu, the most elaborate side of the kitchen. The dishes that sum it up are the beetroot ravioli, the carbonara, which swaps egg and pancetta for tofu, the bao of adobo-marinated Heura with pickled onion and sriracha mayo, and the pakoras; for pudding, the "chocolate textures", which remind more than one diner of a Kinder Bueno.

There are gluten-free dishes and many others can be adapted if you ask, and they do takeaway and delivery. If you don't eat meat it's a safe bet; if you do, it's a good way to find out that plant-based food can be a full, flavourful meal.
