La Vieja de Jonay Hernández
Canarian chef Jonay Hernández's restaurant
View in the app · free, no sign-upOn Plaça de Raimundo Clar in El Sindicat, Canarian chef Jonay Hernández cooks the islands he comes from with a modern mind: 'creative cuisine with Canarian flavours', as the house puts it, which on the plate means dishes you'll hardly find anywhere else in Mallorca. The obligatory start is papas arrugadas — wrinkled salt-crusted potatoes — with red and green mojo; then come gofio and rice arepas, croquettes of gofio escaldón (a toasted-grain broth), cannelloni of ropa vieja, the Canarian shredded-meat stew, and the bichillo, the dish regulars mention most. Roast octopus with bone-marrow mojo and the 'our way' corvina ceviche round off the favourites, with bolder turns such as mackerel with green-apple ice cream or pig's trotters with foie. Desserts have names of their own: 'Eat Tenerife' and 'The Incredible Hulk'. Nearly the whole menu is gluten-free and other intolerances are catered for; there's a house vermouth, cocktails and a broad wine list. The tableware, every piece different, and the industrial-style room full of details are part of the show, and there's a large terrace on the square. Portions are on the small side and the bill isn't low for what you eat: come to discover Canarian cooking with imagination, not for a big feed.
