Two friends with itchy feet opened Moltabarra on Carrer del Pes de la Farina, in Sa Gerreria, with an idea still spelled out on their website: a 'travel library', a bar where visitors and islanders could swap stories of past trips and plan the next one over beers and pintxos. The big, rustic room, crammed with curiosities, is one long counter loaded with pintxos plus a menu of larger plates. The dishes that define the place are the tortillazo pintxo, which goes fast; the nachos with chilli, also in vegetarian or vegan versions, with a chilli that isn't hot unless you ask for the Mexican kick; the chicken wings, patatas bravas or with Cabrales blue-cheese sauce, and a Mallorcan frit of lamb and potato. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, imported and craft beers, and a house vermouth with a twist: upstairs is the soda-siphon museum, and ordering vermouth can land you on a half-theatrical, half-surreal tour led by the house 'siphon man' (say so if you'd rather not join in). The week has its regular themes — Mexican nights, egg nights, beer-and-pintxo deals — and in season there's micro-theatre and exhibitions upstairs. It's loud, young and made for groups: perfect to kick off a night in the old town, less so for a quiet dinner for two.
