Periplo Portixol

Market fish off the grill for sharing, facing the sea in El Molinar

Right on the Es Molinar seafront, the old fishing quarter between the Es Molinar and Portixol harbours, Periplo is the charcoal-grill restaurant of Grupo Amida, the family from Castile who arrived in Mallorca in 1987, started with La Bodeguilla — often called its big brother — and also run BàrBar and Bar Nicolás. It borrows much of La Bodeguilla's menu and its respect for produce; here the star is the live fire. The menu warns that they won't always have everything, as it depends on the season and the weather, and suggests putting every dish in the middle of the table. At the heart of it is market fish cooked over the coals and charged by weight: sea bass, sole, John Dory, Mallorcan scorpion fish and lobster. The house rice dishes, for a minimum of two, are the other reason to come: arroz del senyoret with red prawn, squid and scallop, a dry lobster rice and a black squid-ink fideuà (short noodles) with artichokes and young-garlic aioli. To start there are oysters, prawn carpaccio with an emulsion made from the heads, fried Mallorcan ray and grilled squid with wagyu cecina; for meat, Galician veal fillet or Angus rib-eye. It's recommended in the Michelin Guide. The terrace faces the sea: winter sun at lunchtime, a sea breeze on summer evenings.
