A blue 1969 Seat 600 parked by the door is Es Molí’s calling card, on Plaça Mossèn Sebastià Grau in the upper part of Sant Elm, where the path towards the Tramuntana begins and away from the comings and goings of the promenade. There’s a stone-walled dining room with vintage objects and several terraces among plants, and the cooking moves between a Mediterranean base, the grill and an Asian and Mexican repertoire that has been part of its identity for years. The dish that sums it up best is cod in a chickpea-flour batter with sobrassada and Mallorcan honey sauce: crisp, not greasy, with the island’s sweet-and-spicy kick. Next come oxtail and foie gras cannelloni with truffled béchamel, and from the grill Ibérico secreto, lamb chops and beef tenderloin, with meat brought in from the Basque Country. Cochinita pibil tacos and woks are the lighter counterpoint. Paella isn’t on the daily menu: it’s made to order. Among the desserts, the chocolate-mousse “fake egg” is the one people remember. There’s a playground opposite, visible from the terrace, which makes it the place in Sant Elm where many families end up.
