A homemade-tapas gastrobar on Costa de Sa Pols

Costa de Sa Pols is one of those sloping old-town streets that still has vintage shop signs, second-hand stores and old-school cafés, and at number 8 Juanan and Olga opened Sa Costa, a gastrobar of homemade tapas for sharing. They buy their produce at the Mercat de l'Olivar, a few minutes' walk away, and the cooking keeps things simple: tapas, griddled meat and fish, a bit of street food and house desserts. The dish to order is the variat mallorquí, the plate of assorted little portions served in the island's bars, made for sharing; after that come the house patatas bravas, garlic prawns and crispy Korean chicken, and if you want something more filling, a 160-gram Angus smash burger or griddled sea bass with your choice of side, trampó (Mallorcan tomato, pepper and onion salad) included. Inside, the place is a little jungle with an Amazonian colonial theme — palm-and-toucan wallpaper, patterned tiles, a green bar, wicker chairs and plants everywhere — and outside there's a terrace on the pedestrian street and a few small balconies for watching the centre go by. It works as well for a late lunch in the middle of a shopping day as for tapas and a beer as the evening comes on.
