What you come for is behind the door at number 4, Carrer del Temple: an inner courtyard full of plants, shaded by a hundred-year-old mandarin tree, where you eat outdoors almost all year round, smoke-free, with the odd cat wandering between the tables. It’s been open for fifteen years, Alejandro Jaramillo runs it, and the food is vegan with an unusual mix: a Mediterranean base built on local, seasonal produce, plus the flavours of Colombia. On the Colombian side, order the patacones — fried green plantain — with homemade guacamole, or the yuca and arepas; on the other, hummus with bread rolls, focaccia filled with seitan, caramelised onion and aioli, and the vegan carbonara, the dish that goes out most. There are also burritos, Heura or bean burgers and a changing dish of the day (vegetable lasagne, stuffed peppers, chilli). Drinks are homemade, such as lemonade and kombucha, and there are no branded soft drinks. For dessert, nearly every table ends with the carrot cake with pistachio. Portions are generous and the menu short. It’s a place for an unhurried meal and for anyone who wants to eat vegan without feeling they’re missing out; non-vegans leave well fed too. When it turns cool or the mosquitoes are out, you eat in the room inside. Their website also lists low-key DJ sets at Thursday and Sunday dinners, and pilates and salsa classes.
