El Camino

Counter dining: fresh Mallorcan seafood and tapas, no tables, vibrant energy.

There are no tables here, or hardly any: a very long bar lined with stools runs the length of the room on Carrer de Can Brondo, with the open kitchen on the other side, every station – frying, cold, grill – working a metre from you. Eating at El Camino is largely about watching that machine. The menu is small plates to share, made with produce that arrives fresh every day, and the repertoire is that of a very good Spanish tapas bar, well executed with no odd experiments. The most-ordered dishes make sense: the courgette flower stuffed with goat’s cheese, gone in two bites and always ordered again; the ham croquettes, creamy inside and crisp outside; the tortilla, classic or with prawns; and the fillet steak with its sauce and asparagus or the Iberian pluma to round off the savoury part. Cauliflower is a house dish and there are usually daily specials (clams, queen scallops, a rice). Portions are small and prices high, wine included, so the bill climbs fast: €50–60 a head is normal. It’s for people who enjoy the noise of a working kitchen and eating elbow to elbow; if you want privacy or big portions, you’ll be happier elsewhere.
