Puig de Massanella
Mallorca's highest open summit, with snow houses and a spring in the rock
At 1,364 metres this is the highest summit in Mallorca you can actually climb: Puig Major is a military zone. You start at Coll de sa Batalla, next to the petrol station, and the track enters the private Comafreda estate, which charges a fee at a barrier. Higher up the pines give way to a desert of bare limestone: the Pla de sa Neu, with the snow houses where nevaters stored ice until the 20th century, and the Font de s'Avenc, a cold spring in a hollow of rock. The last stretch is a scramble using your hands. From the top you face Puig Major and look down on the bays of Alcúdia and Pollença.
