What to do on a rainy day
When it rains in Mallorca it rarely lasts long: use it for what you enjoy indoors.
Museums in Palma:
- Es Baluard Museu: contemporary art inside a Renaissance bastion.
- Fundació Miró Mallorca (Cala Major): the studios where Miró worked in his last years.
- Fundación Juan March: an 18th-century palace with avant-garde art; free entry, closed on Sundays.
- CaixaForum Palma: the old modernist Gran Hotel, with exhibitions.
Caves:
- Coves de Campanet: no coloured lights or music, just stalactites and silence.
- Coves d'Artà: huge halls next to Canyamel; go on the first tour.
- Coves de Gènova: small and 10 minutes from central Palma.
Outside Palma:
- Cartoixa de Valldemossa: monks' cells, the old pharmacy and a piano recital every hour.
- Can Prunera (Sóller): a modernist house turned museum.
- Wineries with a tour and tasting: Celler Ramanyà (Santa Maria del Camí) or Bodegas Oliver Moragues (Algaida). Book ahead.
When it rains, stay away from torrents and mountain paths: the water rises very fast.
Heavy rain in Mallorca comes mostly in autumn, from September to November, in short but fierce storms. When AEMET, Spain's weather agency, issues a yellow or orange rain warning, do not drive through torrents or flooded crossings, and save the Tramuntana walks and gorges for another day: water comes down all at once and the rock stays slippery for hours.
Caves are the safest bet in bad weather, as the temperature inside barely changes all year. The Coves de Gènova are in Palma, a few minutes from the centre; Campanet has a free car park and usually opens 10am–5pm in low season; the Coves d'Artà, near Canyamel, can only be visited on a guided tour, in Spanish, English or German. On a wet day everyone has the same idea, so go for the first tour of the morning and book wineries ahead.
Frequently asked questions
What is the rainiest month in Mallorca?
Autumn is the wettest season, especially September to November, when the sea is still warm and short, heavy storms build up. Winter rain is more spread out and summer is almost dry. A whole day of rain is unusual: skies tend to clear within a few hours.
Which caves can I visit in Mallorca when it rains?
The Coves de Gènova in Palma are small and close to the centre. The Campanet caves inland have free parking and a quiet route. The Coves d'Artà near Canyamel have huge chambers and are visited on a guided tour. Turn up for the first tour to avoid queues.
Is it safe to hike in the Tramuntana when it rains?
No. With an AEMET rain warning in place, stay away from torrents, gorges and mountain paths: water rises very quickly and wet limestone is extremely slippery. Wait at least a day after a heavy storm and never cross a flowing torrent, on foot or by car.
