Mallorca month by month

Mallorca in January

Sant Antoni bonfires, Palma without queues and the Tramuntana to yourself: January is the island locals live in.

In January, Palma has an average high of 15 °C and an average low of 8 °C, the sea is around 15 °C and it rains on about 6 days (averages 2016–2025).

January is the quietest month of the year. Many hotels and restaurants in the beach resorts (Alcúdia, Cala Rajada, the Calvià coast) close until spring, but Palma, Sóller, Valldemossa and the inland villages carry on as always: markets, neighbourhood bars and set lunch menus full of locals. Days are short, so start early.

The big event is Sant Antoni and Sant Sebastià. On the night of 16 January towns light bonfires (foguerons), the dimonis come out and people grill sausages in the street; Sa Pobla, Artà, Manacor and Muro are the liveliest. In Palma, the Sant Sebastià revetla fills the squares with bonfires and concerts on the eve of the 20th. It is a good month for walking in the Tramuntana, seeing museums without queues and, at the end of the month, the first almond blossom.
